Dora Maar

“She felt that art should represent the content of reality through links with intuitions or ideas, rather than visually reproduce the natural."

Henriette Theodora Markovitch, better known as Dora Maar--a muse of Pablo Picasso--was born on November 22, 1907, Paris, France. It was much later, in the 1930, when she opened a photography studio with Pierre Kéfer, a photographer and film decorator. Together they took mostly commercial photographs for advertisement and fashion. Dora Maar’s work was heavily influenced by surrealism, using reflections, mirrors, and contrasting shadows in her work. Besides being a photographer, Dora Maar was also a poet and painter.

Visual Elements

  • The use of props and objects to represent her ideas. As well was the attentive and thoughtful placement of them on the photograph.

  • Using female models for the main focus point of her photos.

  • The meticulous and meaningful positioning of hands and arms in every picture.

  • Harsh shadows and softer ones that cause a visible contrast in the image.
